How this ranking is scored
We took zero-ozone ENERGY STAR air purifiers certified for rooms of 250 sq ft or less and compared the 10 with the highest smoke CADR.
- Smoke CADR (45%): how fast it removes the smallest particles (smoke) (higher is better)
- Smoke CADR per watt (35%): clean air per watt of electricity (higher is better)
- Annual energy use (20%): certified yearly electricity use (lower is better)
FAQ
What CADR does a small room need?
A common rule of thumb (AHAM) is a smoke CADR of at least two thirds of the floor area: about 100 cfm for 150 sq ft. The models here range from 149 to 161 cfm.
Do any of these produce ozone?
No. Every model on this page has 0.00 ppb certified ozone emissions.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR certified Room Air Cleaners dataset (retrieved 2026-11-01). We rank the certified CADR and energy results; we did not test the units ourselves.
